Many young people often wonder: why exactly does the government not grant postings within one's own city? In reality, there are several significant reasons behind this policy. The government aims to ensure that employees gain work experience across diverse locations and do not remain confined to a single region. Particularly in fields such as policing, administration, and banking, this rule is enforced to ensure that work is conducted impartially and to prevent any form of bias or favoritism. In the case of central government jobs, employees may be posted anywhere across the entire country.
Rules Designed for Impartiality and Corruption Prevention
In many departments, the primary reason for not granting postings near one's home is the need to maintain impartiality. If an officer or employee were posted to an area where their relatives, friends, or acquaintances reside, it could potentially influence their decision-making process. However, a new system allowing CRPF personnel to receive postings closer to their homes was introduced in 2014. At that time, the CRPF decided to station its personnel within their designated "Home Zones" to enable them to remain close to their families and to help alleviate stress.

If every employee were to be posted in the immediate vicinity of their home, many remote and far-flung areas would be left without any staff at all. This is precisely why employees in sectors such as the railways, the postal department, banks, and government hospitals are frequently deployed to different states and districts. Often, young recruits initially feel distressed at the prospect of moving far away from home. Indeed, living away from one's family, adapting to a new language, and adjusting to a new environment is no easy feat. However, with the passage of time, this very experience proves beneficial to them—both in their professional careers and in their personal lives. Many employees eventually manage to secure a transfer, allowing them to return closer to their home states or cities. The government also continues to work on implementing policies—such as posting married couples to the same station—to address these concerns.
In Changing Times, Some Departments Are Offering Relief
As times evolve, certain government departments have begun to recognize and empathize with the difficulties faced by their employees. Many government institutions are now striving to avoid posting employees to locations that are excessively distant—a consideration applied particularly to female employees and those with families. Furthermore, some departments now offer the facility of a "home-state posting," albeit on a limited basis.
