Train Luggage Update: Here is important news for train passengers. What would you do if a passenger occupying the lower berth stops you from storing your luggage there during the journey? Find out the railway rules.

Indian Railway Luggage Rule: Disputes often arise between passengers during train journeys—sometimes over seats and other times over luggage storage. Such conflicts can spoil the entire trip. Arguments frequently break out regarding the space under the lower berth. Many people are unaware that the space beneath the lower berth is not reserved solely for the lower berth passenger; passengers in the middle and upper berths can also use it. If you travel by train frequently, you should be aware of this rule.

Who can store luggage there?

It is important to note that the space under the lower berth is not exclusive to the passenger occupying that berth; other passengers in the same seating area can also store their luggage there. If a lower berth passenger tries to remove your luggage to place their own, you can lodge a complaint. As long as luggage is placed with mutual consent, no passenger can stop another from using that space.

Rules for middle and upper berth passengers

If you have a middle or upper berth, you are permitted to store your luggage in the space under the lower berth; however, ensure that your luggage stays within the limits prescribed by the railways.

What to do if a passenger stops you from storing luggage?

If a lower berth passenger or anyone in the same seating area prevents you from storing your luggage, try explaining the rule to them calmly. If they refuse to listen and attempt to forcibly remove your luggage, you can file a complaint.

You can first report the matter to the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) present on the train. If the TTE is not present on the train at that time, you can call the railway helpline number 139.
You can also lodge a complaint via RailMadad.
If the situation escalates, you can seek assistance from the RPF.
