Some consider letting someone else travel on the ticket instead of cancelling it; however, according to railway rules, this is not always possible, as the person in whose name the ticket is booked is generally the only one authorized to travel. That said, the Railways does allow ticket transfers to certain family members under specific rules.
Recently, several claims regarding train travel have been circulating widely. These claims suggest that passengers can change their name and travel date after booking a ticket without any charge. Many people believe this to be true, but the reality is quite different.
What are the rules for tickets booked at a reservation counter?
If you booked your ticket at a railway reservation counter, you can change the date, subject to certain conditions. To do this, you must visit the reservation counter and submit a request at least 24 hours before the train’s scheduled departure. Please note that the Railways charges a fee for changing the date, and this facility is available only once for the same destination.
What if the ticket was booked online?
If you booked your ticket online via IRCTC, you cannot directly change the travel date. In such a case, you must first cancel the existing ticket and then book a new one.
Can the name on the ticket be changed?
If you enter any incorrect details while booking a ticket, you cannot edit them later; however, under certain rules, the Railways allows the transfer of a confirmed ticket to specific family members—such as parents, spouse, siblings, or children.
How to transfer the ticket to a family member
If you wish to transfer your ticket to a family member, here are the necessary steps to follow:
You must submit an application to the Station Master or the Chief Reservation Supervisor’s office at least 24 hours before the train’s scheduled departure.
You will need to provide certain documents, such as your Aadhaar card and PAN card.
The ticket transfer process is completed once the Railways grants approval.

Always fill in all details carefully.
