MMRDA News: The Mumbai Monorail is set to resume operations after nine months, but the MMRDA is considering a fare hike due to losses and rising costs, which could impact passengers' pockets.

Mumbai Monorail Service: Passengers using the Mumbai Monorail may soon witness a significant change. The service, which had been suspended for a long time, is preparing to get back on track; however, along with the relief of its resumption, passengers might face a heavier financial burden. A proposal to increase fares is being drafted to make the loss-making Monorail service financially viable.

According to a *Hindustan Times* report, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is considering a revision in fares. Officials state that the Maharashtra government feels a fare hike is necessary given the rising costs associated with maintenance and the procurement of new train rakes.

Why might Monorail fares increase?

The Mumbai Monorail has been grappling with financial losses and technical issues for a long time. Services were suspended on September 20, 2025, due to recurring technical glitches, safety concerns, and operational difficulties.

During the suspension period, several tasks were undertaken, including upgrading the train fleet, repairing tracks, and installing modern signaling systems. Additionally, a substantial amount has been spent on purchasing new train rakes. The government maintains that raising fares is essential to manage these expenses and sustain improved service quality.

What changes are proposed for the new fares?

If the Maharashtra government approves the fare hike proposal, it would mark the second time passengers face higher costs since the Monorail began operations in 2014. This could bring its fares closer to those of the Mumbai Metro.

Under the proposed fare structure, the minimum fare for a journey of up to 3 kilometers could be raised from ₹5 to ₹10. Meanwhile, the maximum fare for distances of 18 kilometers or more could be set at around ₹70.

Monorail service grappling with losses

The monorail has consistently faced financial losses. Critics have often labeled it a "white elephant" project due to its high costs and low revenue generation. According to reports, the project incurred a loss of over ₹460.26 crore in the 2025-26 fiscal year. The procurement of new train rakes from Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives and associated maintenance costs have been cited as major reasons for this.

However, the service is expected to officially resume once safety clearance is obtained. Final approval from the Maharashtra government's Urban Development Department is awaited before operations can restart.
