Train News: No Seat Despite Confirmed Ticket? Railways to Pay ₹20,000 Compensation—Know Your Rights
Train Seat Issue: A startling incident involving Indian Railways has come to light, wherein four passengers faced not only mental distress but also physical and financial hardship despite holding valid tickets.
Train Seat and Railway Compensation: A highly surprising case regarding the rights of passengers traveling with Indian Railways has recently surfaced. In this instance, a consumer court in Bihar delivered a significant verdict, ordering the Railways to refund the ticket fares—including interest—to four passengers and to pay them substantial compensation. The court issued this order because, despite holding confirmed tickets, the passengers were denied access to their reserved seats.
What Exactly is the Case?
Four passengers traveling from Vindhyachal in Uttar Pradesh to Arrah in Bihar had booked confirmed tickets on the LTT-Patna Express. Upon boarding the train, the four passengers discovered that railway employees were occupying their assigned seats. Furthermore, despite their repeated requests to vacate the seats, the passengers were not accommodated.
Angered by the situation, the passengers lodged complaints via the railway helpline, the 'Rail Seva' portal, and various social media platforms; however, no action whatsoever was taken throughout the entire journey. Most shockingly, at Buxar station, the TTE (Ticket Examiner) cited overcrowding as an excuse and instructed the passengers to complete their entire journey standing up.
The Court's Verdict and Compensation
The Consumer Commission acknowledged that the Railways had completely failed to deliver the promised service, thereby subjecting the passengers to not only mental distress but also physical and financial hardship. Consequently, the court ordered the Railways to complete the payment within 60 days. Under this order, the Railways are required to pay ₹20,000 as compensation for the mental and physical distress caused, along with ₹15,000 to cover legal expenses.
What Can Passengers Do in Such Situations?
If you hold a confirmed ticket and someone occupies your seat, you can immediately register a complaint via the 'Rail Madad' app, the official railway website, or the helpline number. If your grievance remains unaddressed through these channels, you can also approach the Consumer Court to file a complaint and assert your rights.
