Railway Rule: The Railways has implemented a new rule to improve food and beverage facilities for passengers. Under this rule, vendors lacking a valid ID and a QR-coded identity card will no longer be permitted to sell goods on trains.

Railways Vendor Rule: Passengers often carry homemade food but frequently purchase tea or snacks to satisfy minor hunger pangs during the journey. Did you know that unauthorized vendors roaming the trains often sell substandard goods, which can cause passengers to fall ill? However, there is no need to worry now, as the Railways has introduced a new rule to address this very issue.

What is the new Railway rule?

Only vendors possessing a valid Railway-issued identity card—complete with a QR code—will be allowed to sell goods on trains. Individuals without such identification will not be permitted to sell food or beverages on board. This rule has been implemented with passenger safety in mind.

Significantly, it is not just the Railway Protection Force (RPF) but also the Traveling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) who will keep a close watch on such individuals. If a vendor is found on a train without an ID card or QR code, the TTE will immediately report the matter to the control room and the RPF. Upon receiving this information, the RPF team will take action at the next station. According to Saurabh Jain, Senior DSP of the Kota Railway Division, no one will be permitted to sell food or beverages on trains without proper identification.

Why did the Railways introduce this rule?

The issue of unauthorized vendors has persisted in the railway system for a long time. Despite numerous complaints and enforcement actions, such individuals continue to sell poor-quality food on trains. The Railways believes that the joint efforts of TTEs and the RPF will help curb the activities of unauthorized vendors.

How will passengers benefit?

Passengers will now receive better quality food.
The risk of illnesses caused by poor-quality food will be reduced. Additionally, the movement of strangers on the train will be reduced, thereby enhancing security.
The risk of theft and other crimes will decrease.

What should you do if you spot an unauthorized vendor?

The Railways has appealed to passengers to immediately inform the TTE if they see an unauthorized vendor selling goods during the journey—specifically one who lacks a QR code and an identity card. You can also report this to the RPF personnel present on the train or call the Railway helpline number, 139.
