Train Boarding Point Change Rule: Millions of people travel on Indian Railways every day. To ensure passenger convenience, numerous trains are operated daily. While traveling by train typically requires booking a ticket in advance, plans often change at the last minute. In such situations, some passengers choose to cancel their tickets, while others may need to change their boarding point. The Railways have implemented several changes to the rules governing everything from ticket cancellations to changes in boarding points. Let us explain the new rules regarding changing your boarding point.

Specifically, the Railways have revised the regulations concerning ticket cancellations. Under the new rules, distinct refund rates and penalties have been established for ticket cancellations. These regulations will become progressively stricter as the train's scheduled departure time approaches. This will also have a financial impact on passengers. The Railways is set to implement these new rules between April 1 and April 15, 2026.

New Ticket Cancellation Rules:
The Ministry of Railways has amended the rules regarding the cancellation and refund of confirmed tickets. Under these revised regulations, if a ticket is not cancelled within the stipulated timeframe, no refund will be issued. The new rules stipulate that refunds will now be granted based on the specific timing of the cancellation. If a ticket is cancelled more than 72 hours before the train's departure, only a nominal cancellation fee will be deducted; for instance, if the ticket costs ₹1,000, almost the entire amount will be refunded, with only a small administrative charge being withheld. Conversely, if a ticket is cancelled between 72 and 24 hours before departure, 25% of the fare will be deducted—meaning that for a ₹1,000 ticket, ₹250 will be withheld, and ₹750 will be refunded. Similarly, if a ticket is cancelled between 24 and 8 hours before departure, 50% of the fare will be deducted; thus, for a ₹1,000 ticket, ₹500 will be withheld, and ₹500 will be refunded. Finally, if a ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours before the train's departure, no refund will be granted—meaning that if your train is scheduled for 6:00 PM and you cancel the ticket after 12:00 PM (noon) on the same day, you will not receive any refund.

New Rule for Changing Boarding Points
Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure. Previously, such changes had to be made before the reservation chart was prepared. For instance, suppose you hold a ticket from Station A to Station Z, but your plans suddenly change, and you wish to board from Station B; in such a scenario, you can now change your boarding point via mobile device up to 30 minutes before the train departs from Station A. The benefit of this rule is that passengers can make last-minute changes to their plans and conveniently catch the train from a different station.
