The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reduced the waiting period for porting a mobile number after a SIM swap from 10 days to 7 days. The move comes amid rising phone number frauds across the country. The rule will be implemented from July 1.

The regulator said in a press release, 'The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2024 on March 14, 2024, which will come into force from July 1, 2024.'

How will cyber crimes be reduced?
With the new regulation, TRAI has added additional criteria for rejecting the allocation request of the Unique Porting Code (UPC). The regulator said that if the request for UPC is made before the expiry of seven days from the date of SIM swap/placement, then UPC will not be allocated. TRAI said in its release that these amendments aim to curb the porting of mobile numbers by scammers through fraudulent SIM swap/replacement.

Let us tell you that recently, the Telecommunication Act 2023 came into force. Apart from the rest of the changes, the new telecom law allows the government to take control of telecom operators in case of emergency.

Another big change coming with the new telecom law is that it allows people to register a maximum of nine cards in their name. However, for those living in Jammu Kashmir and the Northeast states, a person will be able to buy a maximum of 6 SIM cards according to this law.
