TRAI Update: What is TRAI's pilot project, how will it help in getting rid of commercial calls?

You might have realized that as soon as you buy something from a shop or retail store, your mobile number is taken there. After this, within a few days, you start getting calls and messages. Sometimes you get calls for information about a sale, sometimes for details of a new scheme. All this happens without your permission and this is called a commercial call or spam call.

Now to get relief from this problem, TRAI i.e. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has started a new pilot project.

Why was this decision taken?

Retail stores and companies often claim that they have taken offline consent from customers, so they can call or message. However, it is difficult to find out the truth of this offline consent. This is the reason why TRAI has now said that the consent of customers will be taken digitally. And this consent will be recorded in a special registry so that anyone can verify it.

What is Digital Consent Registry?

TRAI has prepared a digital consent registry in collaboration with telecom companies. In this, when a company takes consent from customers in a digital way, it will be necessary to register that data in the registry.

Now if a company wants to call or send a message, it will first be seen whether the digital consent of that customer is in the registry or not. If not, then the company will not get permission to call.

When and where did this pilot project start?
TRAI has started this rule in a pilot form from June 13. For this, TRAI has included some selected banks in collaboration with RBI (Reserve Bank of India). Banks have been asked to take consent from their customers in a digital way. If a bank does not do this, then it will not be able to call its customers to sell its products.

What will happen if someone calls without permission?

If a retailer, bank or company makes a commercial call to someone without digital consent, then their number will be blocked or disconnected. TRAI can take action against that company. Customers have the right to complain Will remain.

What is the benefit of this to the common users?

You will stop receiving calls and messages without your permission. Only those companies will contact you to whom you have given permission digitally. Your privacy will be safe and you will get relief from unnecessary calls.
