Telecom regulator TRAI has announced that it has blacklisted 2.1 million numbers making fraudulent calls and messages in a single year. The regulator has also issued a public advisory.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) stated that it has banned over 2.1 million mobile numbers making fraudulent and spam calls and messages in the past year. In addition, nearly 100,000 other entities have been blacklisted. The telecom regulator has also issued a public advisory regarding the fight against spam. TRAI stated that mobile users should not only block fraudulent and spam calls but also report them. Users can report these numbers through TRAI's official DND app.

Reporting a fraudulent number has this benefit.

TRAI's advisory states that this major action was taken only after receiving reports from a large number of people. When a number is reported through the app, TRAI and telecom companies trace, verify, and permanently disconnect it. However, if a user simply blocks a number, it is blocked only on that device, but the spammer continues to harass other users.

TRAI issued this advice to stop spam.

The telecom regulator has asked users to download the official TRAI DND app. Users are asked to report number receiving spam calls and messages on this app. The regulator advises that people should avoid sharing personal information through calls, messages, and social media. Additionally, calls from suspicious numbers should be immediately disconnected.

Mobile Number Validation Platform to Launch Soon

The Department of Telecommunications is introducing new regulations to curb the ever-increasing cyber fraud. Under this plan, the department will develop a new Mobile Number Validation (MNV) platform. This platform will verify whether a mobile number is being used by the user whose KYC details are available to the telecom company. This platform is expected to be launched in the next few months.
