Toll Tax Relief for Crores: New GNSS-Based Rules Announced

 |

The Union Road Transport Ministry has introduced a groundbreaking change to the toll tax system, offering significant relief to private vehicle owners. Under the new rules, crores of people may no longer need to pay toll tax for certain conditions, thanks to the integration of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology.

Key Highlights of the New Toll Tax Rule

  1. Toll-Free Zone Within 20 km:

    • Private vehicle drivers will now be exempt from toll tax for up to 20 km of travel.
    • This exemption is applicable only to vehicles equipped with GNSS technology.
  2. GNSS Implementation:

    • GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) allows toll charges to be calculated on a per-kilometer basis, making the system more fair and usage-based.
    • The more you travel on toll roads, the corresponding toll will be deducted from your account.
  3. Pilot Projects in Karnataka and Haryana:

    • The new system has been implemented on two highways as pilot projects:
      • National Highway 275 (Bengaluru-Mysore) in Karnataka.
      • National Highway 709 (Panipat-Hisar) in Haryana.
    • The system will be gradually expanded to other highways nationwide.

What is GNSS?

GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is a satellite-based technology that tracks vehicle movement. Using this system, toll charges can be deducted automatically based on the distance traveled on a toll road. The technology eliminates the need for traditional toll booths, simplifying the toll collection process.

Nationwide Rollout

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing GNSS across India. Once fully operational:

  • Toll booths will be eliminated, reducing congestion and saving time for travelers.
  • Satellite-based deductions will ensure transparency and fairness in toll collection.

Benefits of the New System

  • Fair Toll Charges: Pay only for the distance traveled on toll roads.
  • Convenience: GNSS eliminates the need to stop at toll plazas.
  • Time-Saving: Reduced traffic congestion at toll plazas will lead to faster travel.
  • Environmental Impact: Fewer toll booths mean less idling of vehicles, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Conclusion

The introduction of GNSS-based toll collection marks a significant step toward modernizing India's transportation infrastructure. By eliminating traditional toll plazas and introducing a pay-per-use system, the government aims to provide a more efficient and user-friendly experience for travelers.
