Income Tax-Related Matters

If you have already filed your income tax return for the Assessment Year 2025-26, June 30 is a significant date for you. By this day, the Income Tax Department may issue notices in certain cases to scrutinize the filed returns. This usually happens when the department wishes to verify the information provided in the return.

You might receive a scrutiny notice if there is a discrepancy between the information you provided and the department's records—such as Form 26AS, AIS, TIS, or bank details. However, receiving such a notice does not necessarily imply that you have made an error; the department often sends notices simply to reconcile records. Therefore, if you receive a notice, you should respond to it promptly rather than ignoring it.

Complete e-KYC for LPG Subsidy Today

If you use an LPG cylinder from Indane, Bharat Gas, or HP Gas and avail yourself of the gas subsidy, completing your e-KYC by June 30 is mandatory. Oil marketing companies are updating customer records to ensure that the subsidy reaches only eligible beneficiaries.

If e-KYC is not completed by the deadline, your gas connection will not be disconnected; however, the receipt of the subsidy could be interrupted. The subsidy can only resume after the e-KYC process is completed later. Therefore, it is advisable to finish this task on time to avoid any inconvenience. Passport Issuance Costs to Rise from July 1
If you are planning to get a new passport or have an old one reissued, applying by June 30 could be advantageous. The government has increased passport application fees, with the new rates coming into effect on July 1.

Under the new rates, the fee for a 36-page passport will be ₹2,500, while the 'Tatkaal' (expedited) service will cost ₹5,000. Meanwhile, the fee for a 60-page passport will be ₹3,500, and ₹6,000 for the Tatkaal service. Additionally, replacing a lost or damaged passport will also incur a higher fee than before.

Rail Travel Rules to Change Too
Indian Railways is also set to implement new rules starting July 1. Traveling without a ticket or with an incorrect ticket will now attract a higher penalty. The minimum penalty has been raised from ₹250 to ₹500; the actual travel fare must also be paid in addition to this.

If a passenger travels beyond the distance specified on their ticket, the applicable additional charge will also be higher than before. However, there have been no changes to the penalties for serious offenses; if necessary, a court may impose a sentence of up to six months in jail, a fine of up to ₹1,000, or both.

Given this, if you have any pending government-related tasks, it would be wise to complete them by June 30. Completing essential tasks on time not only helps avoid extra costs and penalties but also saves you from potential future hassles.
