Indian Railways: If a passenger misses their train for any reason, a common question arises: what happens to the booked seat, and will the ticket money be refunded? Here is what the rules say.

Indian Railways: Trains, which transport millions of people to their destinations daily, are considered one of the most affordable travel options. Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances, passengers arrive late at the station and miss their train. This raises the question: what happens to their reserved seat, and will they get a refund for it?

When does the TTE assign your seat to another passenger?

If a passenger misses the train for any reason, their seat remains reserved for a certain period. The TTE does not immediately reassign the seat to another person, allowing the passenger a chance to board the train at the next station. The TTE waits for the passenger for the next two stations; however, if the passenger still does not board, the TTE may allocate the seat to passengers on the RAC or waiting list.

Do you get a refund if you miss the train?

Many people are unaware of whether they can get a refund if they miss their train. According to railway rules, the entire fare is not necessarily lost; a refund can be claimed, subject to certain conditions.

How to claim a refund

To claim a refund, it is necessary to file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt). However, please note that this process must be completed within one hour of the train's departure. Subsequently, the remaining amount may be refunded after applicable deductions, in accordance with the rules.

Important points to remember

Try to arrive at the station well before your scheduled departure time to avoid missing the train. If, for some reason, you do miss the train, you may still be able to board it at the next station.
