Thousands of challans will be waived in one go, National Lok Adalat will be held on this day
On September 14, courts across the country will hold National Lok Adalat hearings. Do you know that heavy fines and penalties, such as traffic tickets, can potentially be waived during these hearings? Today, we will explain how the National Lok Adalat benefits ordinary citizens.
What is Lok Adalat?
The National Lok Adalat hearings will be held across the country on September 14, 2024. These courts handle disputes that have not yet been brought to a regular court but are likely to be filed in the future. However, it is important to note that cases involving non-compoundable offenses - which are serious and punishable by law - are not eligible for resolution in Lok Adalat. In simple terms, if an offense is serious and is already being heard in the High Court or Supreme Court, it will not be handled by the Lok Adalat.
Traffic fines waived
If you have received a traffic ticket while driving, you can present your case to the National Lok Adalat for a possible waiver. This also applies to larger fines ranging from ₹20,000 to ₹50,000, if you feel the charges are unfair. Legal experts say that in many cases when such disputes are brought before the Lok Adalat, the penalty can be reduced or even waived altogether.
Appeal for a case
On September 14, almost all courts across the country will hold Lok Adalats, where most cases will be settled on the spot. However, applicants will have to obtain information from the court and apply for a token number by September 9 for their cases to be heard on September 14. If someone has not already applied, their case will not be heard. The National Lok Adalat is an annual event where the public can present their issues to the court, where some cases are resolved immediately.
