The Cobra Battalion is known for finding and eliminating the enemies of the country hiding in difficult areas like forests and ravines within the country. Units of this battalion are also being deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.

Cobra: The Central Reserve Police Force CRPF, formed on 28 December 1949 to handle the internal security of the country, faces the big challenge of dealing with Naxalites and extremists. This force has been deployed to destroy the Naxalite network in areas ranging from dense forests to ravines.

Since to deal with Naxalites and extremists hiding in forests and ravines, there is a need to adopt the same understanding and tactics. That is why a unit of CRPF having expertise in guerrilla and jungle warfare was prepared. It was named Cobra, i.e. Commando Battalion for Resolute Action.

When this Cobra battalion was formed in the year 2008, it was prepared with the aim of taking the lead in guerrilla or jungle warfare. This battalion is known for killing anti-national elements like Naxalites and extremists by entering their areas. 10 units of this commando battalion formed in 2008 are currently serving in different parts of the country.

Led by an IG rank officer

This battalion, working under the leadership of an IG rank officer, is considered to be the most experienced and successful commando team in the country. The reason behind this is that the units of this battalion are deployed to deal with guerrilla welfare and internal disputes, so far no other unit of the country has got as much exposure.

Training is also given to gather intelligence.

During training, the commandos included in this battalion are trained in field engineering, detection of explosions, tactics to save lives in the jungle, and fight against militants and Naxalites apart from guerrilla warfare. Their specialized training program includes planning and execution of jungle warfare operations, physical ability, GPS, intelligence and jumping from helicopters. Cobra commandos are also given special intelligence courses so that they can gather intelligence about the enemy while living in enemy territory and can take effective action by making their strategy accordingly.

It has broken the backbone of Naxalites

Cobra battalion is known as the death knell of Naxalites. Various units of the battalion have killed 61 Naxalites so far. Not only this, more than 850 Naxalites and extremists have been arrested apart from making them surrender. In 2011, a large amount of explosives and weapons were also recovered from the Naxalites. This battalion has nine bravery awards to its name, including two Shaurya Chakras. Units of this battalion are also being deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.
