According to the CAQM, commercial vehicles are a major source of pollution in the NCR, contributing to the rapid increase in pollution. Therefore, only clean fuel vehicles (CNG) and electric vehicles will be allowed for delivery.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has taken a major step to curb the rising pollution in Delhi-NCR. The Commission has clearly directed that the use of petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles will be completely banned in e-commerce and delivery services across the entire NCR, including Noida and Greater Noida. This new rule will come into effect from January 1st, 2026.

After January 1st, no delivery company will be allowed to use petrol- or diesel-powered bikes, scooters, autos, or small four-wheelers. This means that companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Flipkart, and Amazon will have to convert their entire fleets to CNG or electric vehicles.

Why was this decision taken?

According to the Air Quality Management Commission, commercial vehicles are a major source of pollution in the NCR. Delivery vehicles are numerous and operate throughout the day, contributing to a rapid increase in pollution. Therefore, only clean fuel vehicles (CNG) and electric vehicles will be allowed to deliver. The ARTO held a meeting with several e-commerce companies regarding the implementation of the new rule. In this meeting, ARTO officials made it clear to representatives of several e-commerce companies that the 2026 deadline is final and will not be extended. Therefore, companies should begin planning to replace their fleets now.

AQI in Delhi-NCR at Dangerous Level

The air quality in Delhi-NCR has been steadily deteriorating since Diwali. Several areas of Delhi have recorded AQIs above 400. These areas include Jahangirpuri with an AQI of 438, Bawana with 431, Anand Vihar with 427, Noida with 396, and Greater Noida with 380. This AQI level falls in the "very dangerous" category. Therefore, a ban on petrol and diesel vehicles is considered a necessary step. Following the ban on petrol and diesel vehicles used for online delivery, only satellite and environmentally friendly delivery vehicles will be seen on the roads of the NCR in the future.

After the change in the delivery system, only these vehicles will be used:

CNG bikes and scooters

Electric two-wheelers

Electric and CNG three-wheelers

Small electric commercial vehicles
