Popular Chinese apps like TikTok, AliExpress, and WeChat are once again in controversy. These apps have been accused of stealing personal information of users and violating the data privacy rules of the European Union. An Austria-based data privacy organization called noyb has filed a complaint against these three apps in the European Union.
According to the laws of the European Union, every user should have the right to download and access their data. But the report states that apps like TikTok, AliExpress and WeChat are not providing this facility.
This makes it clear that these companies are not following European rules, which may increase their problems. Noyb says that these apps collect a large amount of personal information from users but do not give them the option to access their own data.
The six Chinese companies against which Noyb has complained are also accused of illegally sending users' data to China. If these allegations are proved, it could become a serious matter as it would be a direct violation of the European Union's strict data protection policy. Noyb has previously taken legal action against US tech giants such as Apple and Google's parent company Alphabet.
The Indian government banned many Chinese apps, including TikTok, in the country in 2020 due to security reasons. This step was taken keeping in mind data security and national sovereignty.
Now that similar allegations are emerging in Europe, there is a possibility that these apps may be banned there too. Security of users' information has become the most important issue in today's digital era.
