But some things have been decided regarding this. In India, all people can have only one voter card. If someone has two voter ID cards or someone is thinking of getting another one made. So doing this comes under the category of crime by law.
Many people think that having voter cards in different addresses or states is not a big deal. But doing this can have serious consequences. According to the rules of the Election Commission of India, a citizen's name should be in the voter list of only one assembly constituency.
Having a name in two places or having two cards is considered fraud. This can affect the transparency and fairness of the electoral process. Doing this can lead to punishment under section 182 of BNS and sections 17 and 31 of the Representation of the People Act. If found guilty in this, there can be a jail term of 1 month to 5 years, fine or both.
Many times people get a new voter card made while living in different cities. But they do not get the old card cancelled. Later this mistake can cost them heavily. If you have got two cards made by mistake or due to lack of information. Then there is no need to fear. You can get the old voter card cancelled by filling Form 7.
While filling Form 7, you have to mention which card you want to delete and why. Along with this, you have to provide the required documents. Once the process is completed, the record will be updated and you will be left with only one valid card.
