How accurate is the claim that no interest is charged in a No-Cost EMI scheme? Learn how extra costs can be recovered through processing fees, discounts, and other charges.

Nowadays, the 'No-Cost EMI' option is frequently seen when purchasing smartphones, laptops, TVs, and other expensive products. The name suggests that the customer does not have to pay any interest when buying goods via EMI. However, in reality, No-Cost EMI does not always mean there are no extra costs involved in the purchase. It may include other charges that are important to understand.

Essentially, with No-Cost EMI, a customer can pay the product's price in installments over several months without a separate interest component being displayed, unlike standard EMI plans. For instance, if a phone costs ₹60,000 and is purchased on a 6-month No-Cost EMI plan, the monthly installment might roughly work out to ₹10,000. However, the actual payment structure differs based on the offer's terms and conditions. That is why making a decision based solely on the EMI amount is not advisable.

In No-Cost EMI schemes, banks or finance companies often do charge interest, but an amount equivalent to that interest is adjusted through a 'merchant discount' or an 'upfront discount.'

This means the customer does not see a separate interest charge on their EMI statement, but the product's price and discount structure are different. Therefore, it is crucial to compare the final price for a cash payment versus an EMI payment when considering such offers.

In many cases, a processing fee may apply when opting for No-Cost EMI. This fee depends on the terms set by the bank or finance company. Additionally, taxes may also apply in some instances. Suppose there is a processing fee of ₹999 for an EMI plan on a ₹60,000 product; even if the interest is stated as zero, the customer's total expenditure could reach ₹60,999 (assuming no other charges or discounts apply). The discount offered with a No-Cost EMI plan may differ from the discount available on a standard payment. Therefore, before making a purchase, it is important to compare the final price when paying via cash or card against the total payment amount under the EMI scheme. Some offers include bank cashback or instant discounts, which effectively reduce the actual cost of the EMI; however, the terms and conditions vary for each offer.

If you wish to close the EMI plan before the scheduled tenure ends, foreclosure or pre-closure charges may apply, depending on the bank's policies. Thus, it is essential to review not just the monthly installment amount, but the complete terms, conditions, and charges associated with the EMI.
