Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has made life very easy in the world of digital payments. Now money can be transferred to anyone in a few seconds. But as easily as this system works, a small mistake can also prove to be costly. Many times money goes to the wrong UPI ID in a hurry. If this has happened to you too, then there is no need to panic. You can get your money back by following some easy steps.
Talk directly first
If you have the mobile number of the person to whom the money has gone or it is visible on the app, then first contact him. Stay calm and explain the whole thing and politely request to return the money. Many people return the money without any hassle.
Lodge a complaint from the app
UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM have a transaction history option. Go there and select the transaction in which the mistake has occurred and tap on the option like “Report a problem” or “Raise a dispute”. After this, fill in the necessary details, such as transaction ID, date and amount.
Inform the bank immediately
Don't forget to contact your bank as soon as the mistake occurs. Go to the bank's customer care or nearest branch and inform about it. The bank has a way to handle complaints related to UPI transactions and they can start the reversal process.
Lodge a complaint with NPCI
If you do not get relief from the app or the bank, then the next step is to go to NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). Complaints can be lodged by visiting their website (npci.org.in). For this, you will have to provide transaction details and supporting documents, such as screenshots or bank statements.
Make a final appeal to RBI
If the matter is not resolved even after 30 days, then RBI's Digital Payment Ombudsman can be contacted. You can register your complaint online through RBI's CMS portal. This option is necessary when the amount is large and all previous attempts have failed.
