The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated on Tuesday that biometric Aadhaar authentication (eKYC) is mandatory only for those LPG consumers who have not yet completed the authentication process. This rule does not apply to all customers, contrary to certain social media posts claiming that every LPG user is required to undergo this procedure.

Issuing a clarification on social media, the Ministry noted that confusion regarding biometric Aadhaar authentication has spread among LPG consumers due to certain reports. The Ministry emphasized that this is not a new rule. The objective behind recent posts is simply to encourage as many LPG consumers as possible to complete their biometric Aadhaar authentication.

eKYC Mandatory for Specific Consumers

The Ministry clarified that eKYC is mandatory only for those consumers who have not yet completed this process. Those who have already completed the authentication are not required to do so again. This rule is specifically applicable to beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). According to the Ministry, PMUY consumers are required to undergo this process only once a year—specifically, after receiving 7 cylinders—to continue receiving subsidies on their 8th and 9th refills.

eKYC Can Be Done from Home

The government also stated that this process is very simple and does not require a visit to the LPG dealer. eKYC can be completed from the comfort of one's home, free of cost. The Ministry further clarified that this process will not have any adverse impact on LPG supply; in other words, the supply of cylinders will continue as usual. According to the government, Aadhaar-based eKYC enhances transparency within the LPG system, ensures that subsidies reach the rightful beneficiaries, helps weed out fraudulent beneficiaries, and curbs the illicit sale of LPG cylinders.
