The Game of Deception Ends! How Insurance Portals Are Misleading You—IRDAI Cracks Down
IRDAI Cracks Down: The IRDAI has reined in the arbitrary practices of insurance companies. It has issued orders to eliminate "dark patterns" present on the digital platforms of these companies.
Buying insurance online is often considered a fairly easy decision; it allows you to compare plans and select one that fits your specific needs—all in just a few simple steps. However, for many people, this experience turns into a troublesome ordeal. This is because insurance portals employ "dark patterns" on their websites—tactics specifically designed to mislead customers. Now, the IRDAI has recently devised a strategy to put an end to this deceptive game played by insurance companies.
Specifically, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has directed insurance companies and aggregators to identify and eliminate dark patterns within 15 days. The IRDAI has strictly mandated that insurance companies ensure the user interfaces on their digital platforms comply with the guidelines issued by the CCPA within 15 days, and that they formulate and submit a plan to remove these patterns within one month.
What Are 'Dark Patterns'?
'Dark patterns' are design elements used on apps and websites that serve to mislead users. These designs often manipulate users into taking actions that should ideally be undertaken only after careful consideration and deliberation. In the context of insurance portals, these patterns manifest in ways such as making it difficult to cancel auto-renewal subscriptions, displaying artificially low prices initially only to add hidden charges later, bombarding users with a barrage of calls, emails, or notifications, or coercing users into sharing more personal data than is necessary. Consequently, many users get trapped and inadvertently purchase policies they never intended to buy.
Benefits of the IRDAI Initiative
This action by the IRDAI will help curb sales within the insurance sector that are driven by misleading practices. This measure is beneficial for users, as it ensures they will not feel cheated after purchasing insurance. Furthermore, they will not have cause to regret buying a policy due to having received incorrect information. The implementation of this new rule will put an end to such fraudulent activities by insurance companies.
