In the age of the internet, cases of blackmail using private photos and videos have increased rapidly. Cybercriminals often try to extort money from people by threatening to make their private photos or videos viral. In such cases, the mental pressure can become so severe that some people even take the wrong step. Now, to deal with such threats, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), an agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India, has shared a simple and safe method.

Through I4C's official cyber awareness campaign, Cyber Dost, it has been explained that if someone threatens to post your private photos or videos online, there is no need to panic. Such content can be stopped before it spreads online. This requires a unique digital process that is completely secure and doesn't upload your original photo or video anywhere.

This process requires users to visit a website called StopNCII.org. Here, a digital fingerprint of your personal image or video, called a hash code, is created. This code is a unique digital identification number for your file.

The key is that this entire process takes place on your own device, preventing your original photo or video from being uploaded to the website, ensuring privacy.

Once this digital code is created, it is shared with social media platforms that are involved in this initiative. If an attempt is made to upload the same photo or video elsewhere, the system detects and blocks it. If any existing content exists, it can also be removed. Major social media networks like Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat are connected to this platform.

The purpose of this system is to encourage people to seek legal and technical assistance instead of succumbing to criminals out of fear or shame. If someone is blackmailing you with personal information, instead of paying money or panicking, immediately file a complaint with the cybercrime portal and take advantage of this digital security process. With the right information and vigilance, such threats can be effectively prevented.
