Middle Class Growth: Will it no longer be necessary to move to big cities for good jobs? Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has stated that 500 Indian cities could emerge as new economic hubs. Find out how this will impact the middle class.

Middle Class Growth: If you live in a small town and often feel that moving to a big city is the only way to secure a good job or earn a better income, that perception might change in the coming years. Speaking at an economic conference in France on Friday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman noted that around 500 Indian cities could become new economic hubs in the future. This means opportunities for employment, business, and investment will no longer be confined to metropolitan cities.

Will opportunities increase in smaller cities too?

Even today, lakhs of people leave their hometowns to head to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Pune in search of better jobs and careers. However, the government believes that Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities will witness rapid growth in the coming years. If this happens, people could find better employment, business, and earning opportunities in or near their own hometowns. This would alleviate the pressure on big cities while strengthening the economies of smaller towns.

Why is the middle class called the country’s true engine?

The Finance Minister stated that the middle class is not merely a beneficiary of growth but is actively driving it. Simply put, when people buy homes, spend on their children’s education, purchase vehicles, travel, or make daily purchases, money circulates in the market and business expands. This is why approximately 93% of consumer spending in India comes from middle-class and slightly higher-income families.

A need to learn from AI, not fear it?

Many people today believe that the advent of AI will lead to a reduction in jobs. Addressing this, the Finance Minister stated that the government is running AI-skilling programs across the country so that people can learn new technologies and secure better opportunities. She noted that MSMEs contribute approximately 40% of India’s exports and are increasingly adopting AI. Consequently, the demand for individuals with AI knowledge is likely to rise in the future.
