The era of free UPI is ending! How will the new law impact your wallet?
A new bill passed by the Lok Sabha has paved the way for potential charges on UPI and other digital payments in the future. Will you now have to pay for every UPI transaction? Here are the details.
There is important news for those who use UPI for daily payments. The Lok Sabha has passed a bill that opens the door for imposing charges on future UPI transactions. However, this does not mean that charges will start being deducted from today. For now, UPI remains free, just as it was before. The new law grants the government the authority to levy charges on certain digital payments if the need arises.
Will charges apply to UPI?
No, UPI remains completely free for the general public for now. The government has not implemented any new charges. The law has simply been amended to allow the government to decide in the future which digital payments should attract the MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) and which should not.
What is the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR)?
MDR, or Merchant Discount Rate, is the fee a bank or payment service provider receives for processing a digital payment. Previously, a 'zero MDR' policy applied to UPI and RuPay debit cards, meaning shopkeepers were not charged this fee either. With the new law, the government can modify this arrangement based on requirements.
How will this affect the common man's pocket?
There will be no immediate impact on your finances, as the government has not yet implemented any charges. However, if MDR is applied to UPI transactions in the future, it could affect shopkeepers, payment companies, and—in some cases—customers. Ultimately, this will depend entirely on the government's future decisions.
Why did the government make this change?
The government states that the digital payment system is expanding rapidly. Consequently, the costs for banks and payment companies to operate and improve this system are also rising. The new law gives the government the flexibility to frame rules according to future needs.
Will a fee be charged on every UPI payment?
No such decision has been made yet. If the government wishes, it could apply the MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) only to specific types of transactions or large payments. It is also possible that UPI remains free for small transactions or ordinary customers, just as it is now.
