Senior Citizen FD Interest Rates: Don’t let the pursuit of higher interest put your life savings at risk. Learn which banks are the right choice for a Fixed Deposit (FD) and how to protect your money while managing tax liabilities.

Senior Citizen FD Interest Rates: Everyone wants to invest their hard-earned money where it remains secure while also yielding excellent returns. For senior citizens, Fixed Deposits (FDs) have long been the most trusted investment option. Small Finance Banks and NBFCs are currently offering high interest rates—up to 8.5%—but is it wise to invest in them without careful consideration?

Let’s explore what you should keep in mind when tempted by high interest rates, and how you can save on taxes in light of the latest TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) rules.

Which banks are offering the highest interest rates?

If you are considering opening an FD for a 5-year tenure, Small Finance Banks currently offer the most attractive rates. Refer to the table below to see the potential returns:

Bank / Financial Institution

Interest Rate for Senior Citizens (Per Annum)

Suryoday Small Finance Bank

8.50%

Shriram Finance (NBFC)

8.35% (on selected tenures)

Jana Small Finance Bank

8.00%

Ujjivan Small Finance Bank

7.70%

Equitas / Utkarsh Small Finance Bank

7.50%

AU / slice Small Finance Bank

7.25%

Shivalik Small Finance Bank

6.50%

ESAF Small Finance Bank

6.25%

Is your principal amount safe when chasing 8.5% interest?

While high interest rates are appealing, safety must always come first:

Small Finance Banks: Deposits of up to ₹5 lakh (including both principal and interest) in these banks are fully protected under the DICGC (Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation) scheme. In the event of a bank failure, this government-backed guarantee ensures the recovery of funds up to ₹5 lakh. Therefore, it is advisable not to keep more than ₹5 lakh in any single Small Finance Bank.
NBFCs (e.g., Shriram Finance): FDs with these companies are not covered by the ₹5 lakh DICGC insurance. Before investing, be sure to check the company’s credit rating and its track record.

When is TDS deducted on FD interest?

For senior citizens, the rule is that if the total interest earned from fixed deposits (FDs) with a single bank exceeds ₹1 lakh in a year, the bank automatically deducts TDS (Tax Deducted at Source).

Important points regarding tax and TDS:

Form 121 (formerly Form 15H): If you have no tax liability on your total annual income (for instance, income up to ₹12 lakh is exempt under the new tax regime), you can submit Form 121 to the bank to prevent the deduction of TDS.

Do you still need to file an ITR after submitting the form?

Yes! Form 121 only prevents the bank from deducting tax. If your total income exceeds the tax-exemption threshold, you are still required by law to file an Income Tax Return (ITR).
Relief for individuals over 75: Senior citizens aged 75 years or older, whose income consists solely of a pension and interest earned from the same bank, are not required to file a separate ITR, provided the tax-related formalities have been completed by the bank itself.
