How Did the Pet Rent Trend Start?

This wasn’t an overnight change. The trend reportedly began in areas such as Koramangala and HSR Layout, where several landlords believed pets caused additional wear and tear to the house. Soon, the idea spread to Indiranagar, Bellandur, and Whitefield.

Brokers started subtly slipping a line into their pitch—
“Pets are allowed, but there will be an extra charge.”

This “extra charge” often came with the explanation that it covered cleaning or maintenance costs. Over time, the practice became so common that while searching for a 2BHK, tenants were asked the pet question before anything else. If the answer was yes, extra rent became unavoidable.

Why Do Landlords Justify the Extra Charges?

When questioned, landlords across different localities offered almost identical reasons for pet rent. These include:

  • Deep cleaning after tenants move out

  • Repainting walls or doors scratched by pets

  • Extra cleaning due to fur and odour

  • Stains in balconies or common areas

  • Complaints from neighbours about noise

  • Damage to wooden frames or furniture

However, many tenants argue that these fears are often exaggerated. Not all pets cause damage, yet the rule is applied universally. For responsible pet parents, this blanket charge feels unfair.

More Than Just Rent: Additional Rules for Pet Owners

Beyond the monthly pet rent, Bengaluru’s pet parents are facing several unusual conditions added to rental agreements. Common examples include:

One young woman from Koramangala shared that landlords ended conversations the moment she mentioned having a dog. For many property owners, “bachelor + pet” is considered risky, leading to immediate rejection.

Bengaluru is a city full of pet-friendly spaces, with thousands of residents treating their pets as family. Yet the rental market operates on caution and assumptions. Landlords say they are trying to protect their property, while tenants believe they are being charged unfairly for fears that may not even materialize.

As the number of pet parents grows, so does the tension between affection and affordability. For now, Bengaluru loves pets—but in the rental market, that love comes with extra terms, conditions, and a monthly cost.
