Efforts to empower women through technology in India are receiving international appreciation. Jonathan Fleming, Senior Speaker at MIT Sloan School of Management, visited the Pusa campus of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and appreciated the work being done by women under the 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme. After interacting with the women benefiting from the scheme, Fleming said, "I am excited to see how India is using technology for women's empowerment. This initiative is an inspiration not only for rural Indian women but also for other countries." Drone technology is changing lives During the visit to the ICAR Pusa campus, Jonathan Fleming witnessed a live demonstration of the use of drone technology by four women participants—Geeta, Sita, Priyanka, and Hemlata.

These women used drones to spray fertilizers and pesticides in the fields. This technology not only saves time in farming but also increases productivity. During the interaction, the women said that the 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme not only allowed them to learn drone technology but also provided financial assistance. She mentioned the significant improvement in her financial condition and expressed pride in her new identity as 'Drone Didi'.

What is the 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme?

Under the 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme, the government provides free training to women self-help groups to fly drones and provides subsidies and loans at affordable rates for the purchase of drones. Under this scheme, women's self-help groups are given up to 80% subsidy or a maximum of Rs 8 lakh on the purchase of drones. A loan facility is provided by the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) for the remaining cost of the drone, on which only a 3% interest rate is applicable. By using drone technology, women groups can earn up to an additional Rs 1 lakh every year.
