What if you come to know that with the help of Wi-Fi, it can be told what you are doing in the room. Are you sitting, standing, or walking? This may seem like a scene from a Hollywood science fiction movie, but all this is possible. Researchers at Rome's La Sapienza University claim that a person present in a room can be easily traced from the signals emitted by Wi-Fi.

This technology has been named WhoFi, which works without a camera, microphone, or any device. It can easily identify the changes in the wireless signal due to the size or movement of a person present in a room.

How does this technology work?
Wi-Fi signals spread by bouncing from here to there in a room. Some of these signals are absorbed by an object or even a human. Everyone's body reacts differently to these signals. WhoFi captures these small changes by measuring the details of signal amplitude and phase. This system uses neural networks and is able to identify the unique signal pattern of each person.

The researchers call this dataset NTU-Fi, which is used in standard testing of Wi-Fi sensing technology. They have trained the system to identify a person in a room when he moves from one room to another or another location. The accuracy of this technology in re-identifying a person has reached 95.5 percent.

Unlike cameras or microphones, this Wi-Fi-based technology does not capture images or sound. It may keep a person's private movements secret in a way, but it is equally dangerous to privacy. With its help, people can be easily monitored.

The researchers emphasize that WhoFi technology does not directly collect biometric or personal information of any person. However, they also reiterate that with its help, people can be traced at home, offices, or public places.

When and how will this technology be useful?
This technology is currently limited to research labs. But, Wi-Fi networks have now reached every home. This technology can be used during security, health monitoring, movement or behavior tracking. Along with this, this technology can be used to find hidden enemies during military operations. WhoFi is currently in the developing phase. In the future, it can be used for more purposes.
