Tax: Big relief for taxpayers, the deadline for submitting tax audit reports has been extended, here is the new date..

The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing tax audit reports for the financial year 2024-25. Taxpayers and auditors now have until October 31, 2025, to file these reports. Previously, the deadline was September 30, 2025. However, the CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) granted this extension in response to demands from auditors and professional organizations. This decision will provide significant relief to millions of taxpayers and chartered accountants who were grappling with the challenge of completing the audit process within a short timeframe.
Filing audit reports in a short timeframe was a challenge.
The government had previously set the deadline for filing ITRs as September 15, 2025. This gave auditors only 15 days to file their tax audit reports. Under tax law, many companies, trusts, and business entities are required to submit audit reports by September 30 every year. However, this year, due to time constraints and natural disasters in several regions, preparing the reports within the stipulated time proved difficult. Around 4 million tax audit reports are filed nationwide each year, but by September 23, 2025, only 400,000 reports had been submitted. Consequently, filing the remaining 3.6 million reports in just a few days was practically impossible.
Appeals Shown Effective
The CBDT stated in an official statement that it received several representations from chartered accountant institutions and professional organizations requesting an extension of the deadline. Taxpayers and practitioners cited reasons such as time constraints, regional disasters, and workload. Furthermore, the Jodhpur bench of the Rajasthan High Court, in an interim order, directed the CBDT to extend the tax audit report deadline to October 31, 2025.
This order was issued on a petition filed by the Jodhpur Tax Bar Association. Similarly, the Karnataka High Court, following a petition from the KSCAA (Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association), ordered a one-month extension of the audit report deadline. Considering these appeals and circumstances, the CBDT announced a new deadline under clause (a) of Explanation 2 to Section 139(1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Technical System Fully Functional
The CBDT also clarified that the Income Tax e-filing portal is fully functional and functioning without any technical glitches. According to the Board, 4.02 lakh tax audit reports had been successfully uploaded as of September 24, 2025. Over 60,000 reports were filed on September 24 alone. Furthermore, over 7.57 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) had been filed as of September 23, 2025. It is clear from this data that taxpayers are actively using the e-filing portal, and the process of filing reports is going on rapidly.
