Tatkal Ticket: No more standing in lines at the window for Tatkal tickets—a new system is now in place..
For train travelers, obtaining a Tatkal ticket is often a major struggle. There are only two options: either book online or queue up at a reservation center window overnight to purchase one offline. Often, out of the many people who arrive at reservation centers during the night, only a few manage to secure a confirmed ticket; the rest are forced to return empty-handed. To provide relief to those seeking Tatkal tickets, Indian Railways has launched a new system as a pilot project, which will gradually be implemented across all reservation centers.
Indian Railways has currently initiated this project in the Sonpur Division of the East Central Railway zone. This new initiative has been introduced under the name "Queue Mitra." This system is not merely a technical solution; it offers relief from the long-standing hassle of queuing up—a problem that has persisted for years.
How the New System Works
"Queue Mitra" is a self-service, kiosk-based digital queue management technology wherein passengers generate their own tokens without any direct intervention from railway staff. The process involves Aadhaar-based verification and facial recognition. Each token clearly displays the passenger's photograph, the last four digits of their Aadhaar number, the token number, and the timestamp. Real-time queue status updates are provided via a digital display. The kiosk guides passengers through the process using audio-visual instructions in Hindi. As soon as the camera captures the passenger's face, their Aadhaar details are scanned, and an AI-enabled system instantly issues a token. Thirty minutes before the opening of the Tatkal counter, railway staff verify the passengers' identities by cross-checking their photographs against their Aadhaar details; subsequently, Tatkal tickets are issued in accordance with the established rules.
Key Features of the New System
Only one token will be issued per day per Aadhaar number. Facial recognition technology will serve to prevent misuse of the system. Booking for AC Tatkal tickets will commence at 10:00 AM, while booking for Non-AC Tatkal tickets will begin at 11:00 AM. The interface will be available in both Hindi and English. The system is designed to remain operational even in the event of network connectivity issues. Railway staff are authorized only to call out token numbers in sequence; they cannot alter the order of the queue. Local data generated by the system will be retained for a period of three months. If a user repeatedly uses the same Aadhaar and facial data within five days, the system will automatically trigger an alert.
