Tatkal ticket booking rules: Indian Railways has taken a significant step to make Tatkal ticket booking more transparent. Starting August 1, 2026, West Central Railway (WCR) will implement a token-based Tatkal ticket booking system at all its reservation counters. The objective of this new system is to eliminate long queues, reduce waiting times for passengers, and simplify the booking process. In other words, a new token-based system is set to launch on August 1, 2026, for passengers booking Tatkal tickets at railway counters.

How will Tatkal ticket booking work now?

Under the new rules, passengers will not need to stand in line beforehand to book Tatkal tickets. Instead, they will have to obtain a token during a designated time slot. Once they receive a token, passengers can arrive at the reservation counter at their scheduled time and book their tickets conveniently.

Railway officials state that this will reduce crowding at the counters. The system will become more efficient, and passengers will be spared unnecessary inconvenience. Passengers holding tokens will get the opportunity to book tickets at their allotted time, eliminating the need to wait in multiple queues.

Token timings for AC and Non-AC Tatkal tickets

The Railways has scheduled the token system in alignment with the existing Tatkal booking timings:

AC Tatkal tokens: 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM

Non-AC Tatkal tokens: 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM

How many tokens will be issued in the first phase?

According to West Central Railway, a limited number of tokens will be issued at each reservation counter during the initial phase. The Railways has also clarified that if the system proves successful and the need arises, the number of tokens may be increased in the future.

This new system is currently being implemented within the West Central Railway zone. If the results are positive, it may be extended to other railway zones in the future. Initially, 10 tokens for the AC category and 15 tokens for the non-AC category will be issued at each counter (these numbers are subject to change based on the crowd at the station).

For Non-AC Tatkal: 15 tokens
