Taiwan's Ministry of Commerce has added two Chinese tech giants Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) to its strategic high-tech export control list. After being included in this list, Taiwanese companies will have to seek government permission before sending products to these companies.

This new list was updated on Sunday, which includes global entities like the Taliban and Al-Qaeda as well as many companies from China, Iran, and other countries. Now Huawei and SMIC have also become part of the same list, which has increased the global pressure on both companies.

The US has already imposed sanctions.
The US has already imposed technical sanctions on both Huawei and SMIC. These companies are manufacturing domestically developed artificial intelligence (AI) chips in China to compete with US companies like NVIDIA.

Taiwan is home to the world's largest chip manufacturing company TSMC, which supplies chips to US companies like NVIDIA. In November last year, the US had instructed TSMC to stop supplying certain chips to Chinese customers.

China considers Taiwan as its part and has also talked about forcible occupation, while the US is Taiwan's biggest informal ally and arms supplier. In such a situation, this decision is considered very important from a geopolitical point of view.
