The Government of India is launching a nationwide campaign to reduce reliance on traditional LPG cylinders and promote Piped Natural Gas (PNG). According to an official press release from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the government aims to rapidly expand PNG connections in areas where the necessary infrastructure is already in place.

**Why was this decision taken?**
A letter issued by Ministry Secretary Dr. Neeraj Mittal states that reducing dependence on LPG has become essential due to recent global developments in the Strait of Hormuz region. Furthermore, the heavy subsidies provided for LPG remain a significant financial challenge for the government.

**Heavy burden on the exchequer**
Reports reveal that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are currently incurring a loss of ₹690 per LPG cylinder. On an annual basis, this loss amounts to ₹1,38,000 crore. Additionally, the government provides an extra subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder to beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), creating an annual financial burden of ₹19,000 crore.

**Who will receive a notice?**
The government has directed oil companies and City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities to issue notices to consumers in the following categories:

*   **Consumers with dual connections:** Individuals who possess a PNG connection but have not yet surrendered their LPG connection. This measure aims to curb the black marketing and unnecessary consumption of LPG.

*   **Potential consumers:** Residents living in areas where PNG pipelines have already been laid but who have not yet switched to the service.

Significant responsibility for the success of this campaign has been entrusted to District Collectors, District Magistrates, and municipal officials. They have been instructed to encourage consumers at the local level to fully transition from LPG to PNG.

Benefits of PNG
According to the government, PNG is not only safer and more user-friendly than LPG but is also a cleaner fuel. This will not only reduce dependence on imports but also alleviate the subsidy burden on the government exchequer.
