A supercomputer is an extremely powerful machine designed to perform massive and complex tasks at incredibly high speeds. It can process vast amounts of data in a very short time. They are used for weather forecasting, scientific research, climate studies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), drug discovery, and other major research projects.
How is it different from an ordinary computer?
Unlike standard computers, supercomputers utilize thousands or even millions of CPU cores working simultaneously. This allows them to complete tasks in a fraction of the time a regular computer would take. All processors in a supercomputer operate using parallel processing, which exponentially increases its speed.
How much does a supercomputer cost?
The cost of a supercomputer varies based on its capabilities, technology, and intended use. Small AI supercomputers can range from approximately ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5.5 lakh. Meanwhile, compact systems designed for AI and machine learning—such as the NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano Super—are available for around ₹44,000 to ₹50,000. Supercomputers designed for large institutions and government research are extremely expensive. Those used for weather forecasting, nuclear research, and running large AI models can cost anywhere from ₹25 crore to ₹130 crore or even more. Approximately ₹130 crore was spent on building three indigenous Indian supercomputers, such as the 'Param Rudra'.
How much electricity does a supercomputer consume in an hour?
Operating a supercomputer requires a massive amount of electricity. A typical supercomputer can consume between 20 and 30 megawatts (MW) of power in an hour. 'Frontier', one of the world's fastest supercomputers, consumes about 29 megawatts of electricity per hour. Meanwhile, the 'Colossus' supercomputer, built for AI, has an even higher power consumption; it can utilize up to 280 megawatts of electricity at peak capacity. Additionally, the 'Aurora' supercomputer consumes around 38.6 megawatts, while Japan's 'K Supercomputer' consumes approximately 9.8 megawatts.
