Sugar Price: Get highly affordable subsidized sugar with a ration card—here’s how to avail the benefit.
Ration cardholders can obtain sugar at prices lower than the market rate through the government distribution system. However, this facility is not available to everyone for free; eligibility and benefits depend on the card category and the specific rules of the respective state.
If you hold a ration card and wish to avail the benefit of affordable sugar, this information is important for you. You can now purchase sugar at a reduced price from government ration shops. However, sugar is not provided free of charge to everyone holding a ration card; instead, it is made available to eligible families at a subsidized rate determined by the government. Access to this benefit is generally determined by the card category and state government regulations.
Central and state governments provide sugar at prices lower than market rates to certain eligible families through the Public Distribution System (PDS). This benefit is particularly extended to beneficiaries of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY). If your ration card falls under this eligible category, you can purchase sugar at a lower price from a nearby ration shop. It is important to note that rules regarding the quantity and price of sugar may vary across different states.
Who is eligible for affordable sugar?
In many states, families eligible under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) are allocated a specific quota of subsidized sugar. Eligible beneficiaries receive sugar at a concessional rate fixed by the government. In many locations, the price can be around ₹13.50 per kilogram.
Notably, general PHH (Priority Household) or BPL (Below Poverty Line) ration cardholders are not necessarily entitled to a monthly sugar quota from the central government; this depends on state-specific rules. Some state governments do, however, provide facilities such as special packages or affordable sugar to ration cardholders during festivals.
What must be done to purchase the sugar?
If you wish to avail the benefit of subsidized sugar, visit your nearest Public Distribution System (PDS) shop. Take your ration card and Aadhaar card with you. Then, undergo biometric verification at the ration shop using the e-PoS machine.
Once verification is successful, the dealer will check your card's eligibility. If your ration card qualifies for sugar under the respective state's regulations, you will be provided with the prescribed quantity of sugar at a subsidized rate.
Things to keep in mind before purchasing subsidized sugar:
Check your ration card category.
Inquire about the price and quantity of sugar fixed by the state government.
Ensure you obtain a receipt when collecting your rations.
Note that while you may receive wheat and rice for free under certain government schemes, the sugar rules are quite different. Eligible beneficiaries are usually provided sugar at a fixed concessional rate, meaning you may have to pay a certain amount for it.
