Flash floods in Nepal have caused significant damage. Floodwaters originating from Nepal's Bhote Koshi River are engulfing large parts of the country. Meanwhile, the floodwaters are moving towards Bihar, increasing the risk of flooding there as well. It is anticipated that water levels in rivers like the Kosi and Gandak could rise rapidly overnight, potentially leading to flood-like conditions. Consequently, a high alert has been issued for the Terai regions of Bihar, and residents are being advised to move to safer locations.

If a situation arises where you must evacuate your home due to the threat of sudden flooding, you should keep certain things in mind and ensure you do not forget to take essential items with you.

**Essential measures to take when a flood alert is issued**
Upon the issuance of a flood alert, people living near riverbanks should immediately move to higher, safer ground. Additionally, pay close attention to alerts and instructions issued by the Disaster Management Department and follow them strictly. Contact the helpline number if you face any difficulties. Ensure that all family members stay together in one place.

**Items to take with you first**
If you have to leave your home due to flooding, the first step is to prepare an emergency kit. Include items such as dry food, clean water, essential medicines, a flashlight, and a power bank. Furthermore, pack important documents—such as Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, ration cards, land deeds, and bank passbooks—along with valuables, in a waterproof bag or plastic covering. Since the risk of accidents is high during floods, ensure you pack any regular medications taken by family members, as well as a kit containing ORS packets, Dettol, bandages, and painkillers.
