Subsidy Now Available for 5kg LPG Cylinders; Government Gives Approval
The government has introduced a provision for a proportionate subsidy on 5kg LPG cylinders, similar to the subsidy provided for 14.2kg cylinders. This move offers relief to low-income families, students, migrant workers, and tenants.
Rising domestic LPG prices across the country have disrupted both the kitchen budgets and the peace of mind of the common man. If you use a small 5kg LPG cylinder in your kitchen, this information is important for you. Along with the subsidy provided for 14.2kg domestic LPG cylinders, the central government has now made provisions for a proportionate subsidy on 5kg cylinders as well.
The government's aim is to extend LPG cylinder access to those who find it difficult to afford the upfront cost of refilling a 14.2kg cylinder. This initiative can provide relief to low-income families, students, migrant workers, and individuals living alone. Since smaller cylinders contain less gas, they are easier to use according to one's specific needs and budget. Let us understand how the subsidy for 5kg cylinders will be provided.
How will the subsidy for 5kg cylinders be provided?
According to a post on the social media platform X, the central government has approved the continuation of the ₹300 subsidy—currently provided for 14.2kg domestic cylinders—to Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries through the 2026-27 financial year. The subsidy for 5kg cylinders will be determined based on a proportion of the ₹300 subsidy given for 14.2kg cylinders.

In other words, the subsidy amount for the smaller cylinder will be proportionate to its capacity. The government will spend a total of ₹12,001 crore on this subsidy scheme for the 2026-27 financial year. However, this benefit will be available to eligible beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
For whom is the 5kg LPG cylinder beneficial? A small LPG cylinder can prove particularly beneficial for those who require gas in smaller quantities or cannot afford the cost of a standard 14.2 kg domestic cylinder in a single payment.
