The Defense Ministry says that this will not only give children information about India's military history, but they will also learn courage, empathy, emotional understanding and contribution to nation building.
Who were these three heroes?
Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw: Sam Manekshaw is also known as Sam Bahadur. He was the country's first Field Marshal, who reached this rank in 1973. Born on 3 April 1914 in Amritsar, Manekshaw died on 27 June 2008. He played a major role in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, in which 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered. It is because of his strategy and courage that Bangladesh is an independent country today. The story of his life will tell children how difficulties can be defeated with hard work and courage.
Brig. Mohammad Usman: Brigadier Mohammad Usman was one of those Muslim soldiers of India who served the country without caring for his life in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. He was born on 15 July 1912 in Bibipur, Uttar Pradesh. He was martyred on the battlefield on 3 July 1948. Usman had vowed to take back Jhangar in Jammu and Kashmir from the enemy and fulfilled it by sacrificing his life. His story will teach children that a true patriot chooses the country over religion.
Major Somnath Sharma: Major Somnath Sharma was the country's first Param Vir Chakra winner, which was given to him posthumously. He was born on 31 January 1923 and was martyred on 3 November 1947 in Badgam, Kashmir. He fought the enemies with his entire company to protect the Srinagar airport. Because of his bravery, we consider Kashmir safe today. His story will teach children that one should sacrifice one's life for one's duty.
