Strict Measures for Children Under 16! Ban on Creating Social Media Accounts in This Country Starting June 1
Social Media Ban: According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the responsibility for enforcing the new regulations will lie directly with the online platforms themselves.
Social Media Ban: The Malaysian government is set to take a major step regarding the online safety of children. Starting June 1, new regulations will come into effect across the country, making it significantly more difficult for children under the age of 16 to create accounts on social media platforms. The government aims to protect underage users from the dangerous and harmful content present on the internet.
Increased Responsibility for Social Media Companies
According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the onus of ensuring compliance with the new regulations will rest directly with the online platforms. This means that social media companies must now ensure that underage children cannot easily create accounts.
Furthermore, companies will be required to strengthen their content moderation efforts, take swift action on complaints, and properly verify the identities of advertisers. It will also be mandatory to clearly label any content that has been altered or manipulated. While companies will be granted a grace period to implement these regulations, the exact duration of this period has not yet been determined.
Government Focus on Child Safety
Over the past few years, instances of online fraud, cyberbullying, and objectionable content involving children have risen sharply in Malaysia. Consequently, the government is stepping up its strict oversight of social media platforms.
The threats that concern the government most include online gambling, scams, child exploitation, cyberbullying, and inflammatory content related to religion or race. Officials believe that shielding underage children from such content has become absolutely essential.
Age Verification System May Launch Soon
Malaysia is also preparing to introduce an age verification system for users later this year. Under this system, social media platforms may be required to verify the age of their users. However, this is also considered to be the most significant challenge facing the implementation of these measures. If platforms require identification, it could pose a threat to people’s privacy. On the other hand, questions have also persisted regarding the accuracy of third-party age verification tools. It remains to be seen how Malaysia navigates this delicate balance.
Increasing Restrictions in Many Countries Worldwide
Malaysia is not the only country tightening regulations regarding children’s social media usage. In 2024, Australia passed legislation imposing a near-total ban on social media access for children under the age of 16.
Furthermore, similar regulations have been implemented in France, the UK, and several states across the United States. In India as well, the government of Goa has issued an order prohibiting social media usage for children under the age of 16.
Impact on Companies Like Meta, TikTok, and YouTube
These new regulations will also have an impact on the world’s major tech companies. Companies such as Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and X may now be required to modify their systems and policies within Malaysia.
Given the large population of young internet users in Southeast Asia, this region is considered critically important to tech companies. However, the growing wave of government regulations is now emerging as a new challenge for these firms.
