SSY Interest Rate: Have interest rates increased in the new year? Who can open an account and who benefits from it?
As the new year begins, those investing in their daughters' future are wondering if the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) interest rate has increased. The straightforward answer is no. The Ministry of Finance has maintained the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) interest rate at 8.2% per annum for the January-March 2026 quarter. This announcement was made on December 31, 2025, and also included the rates for other small savings schemes.
The government has clarified that there has been no change in the SSY interest rate. Previously, the interest rate for the October-December 2025 quarter was also kept at 8.2%. This means that the interest rate for this popular scheme has remained unchanged since April 1, 2024.
What is the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana? (What is SSY?)
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a savings scheme specifically designed for girl children. Under this scheme, an account can be opened in the name of a girl child under 10 years of age at a post office or authorized bank. The 8.2% annual interest, which is compounded annually, is currently higher than the fixed deposit rates offered by many major banks. This is why the scheme remains very popular among parents and guardians.
According to the government, the interest rates for small savings schemes like SSY, PPF, and SCSS are determined based on the yield of government bonds (G-Sec) of similar maturity in the secondary market. This is why the rates are currently stable.
Who can open an account?
An SSY account is opened by the guardian of the girl child, who must be under 10 years of age at the time of opening the account. A maximum of two accounts can be opened in the name of two daughters in a family. However, if twins or triplets are born, opening more than two accounts is permitted under certain conditions. The guardian operates the account until the girl child turns 18, after which the girl can manage the account herself upon submitting the necessary documents.
