Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Tax Amendment Bill 2026: The "Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026" was unanimously passed today in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. This Bill is being hailed as a significant step toward establishing a balance between environmental conservation, fiscal discipline, and industrial development within the state. The State Government believes that this amendment will enable effective control over rising air pollution, specifically by levying an additional environmental tax on older and more polluting vehicles. While briefing the House on the matter, the Transport Minister stated that this measure would serve to strengthen both the environment and the state's fiscal position.

Twofold Increase in Environmental Tax
Under the new provisions, the environmental tax on two-wheelers has been doubled from ₹2,000 to ₹4,000. Similarly, for petrol vehicles, this tax has been raised from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, and for diesel vehicles, from ₹3,500 to ₹7,000. This tax will be collected as a one-time lump sum for a period of five years, a measure intended to simplify administrative procedures.

Additional Revenue for the State
The government estimates that this revised tax structure will generate over ₹160 crore in additional annual revenue for the state. These funds will be utilized to bolster road safety, develop modern transport infrastructure, expand the Automated Traffic System (ATS), and conduct training programs within the transport sector.

Relief for the Industrial Sector
While the government has increased the environmental tax on one hand, it has simultaneously provided relief to the industrial sector by capping the maximum Motor Vehicle Tax for crane vehicles at ₹30 lakh. This move is expected to boost investment in the construction and infrastructure sectors.

Promoting Green Vehicles
Through this Bill, citizens will be encouraged to adopt BS-6-compliant and electric vehicles. The government believes that this initiative will reinforce the state's environmental policies and lead to a reduction in pollution levels.

Increased Employment Opportunities
The government has also indicated that this initiative could generate new employment opportunities in rural and tribal regions of the state. Increased activity in the transport and infrastructure sectors will accelerate economic growth at the local level.

Growth Without Additional Burden
Significantly, this bill will not impose any additional burden on the State Consolidated Fund; rather, it will contribute to increasing revenue. The bill received support from all parties in the House, enabling its unanimous passage. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that this bill would prove to be a significant milestone in the direction of Maharashtra's holistic and balanced development, according equal priority to both environmental conservation and economic progress.
