Post Office Speed Post New Rules: If you use India Post's Speed Post service to send *rakhis* to your brothers for Raksha Bandhan or to dispatch important documents and bank passbooks, this news is highly relevant to you. The Department of Posts has implemented significant changes to the Speed Post rules and fee structure, effective August 1, 2026.
Under the new rules, the categories for 'documents' and 'parcels' have been clearly distinguished. Additionally, special 'Express Speed Post' services have been introduced for faster delivery across six major metropolitan cities in the country.
**What qualifies as a document and what as a parcel?**
To eliminate confusion and streamline processes, the Department of Posts has classified items with no commercial value under the 'document' category. Details regarding the items included in the document and parcel categories are provided below.
**Items classified as documents**
According to the new rules, the document category includes items such as PAN cards, Voter IDs, driving licenses, passports, and other government-issued identity cards (including those issued by UIDAI). It also covers banking and financial documents like bank passbooks, chequebooks, welcome kits, bank statements, credit/debit cards, and insurance papers. Furthermore, keeping occasions like Raksha Bandhan, birthdays, and other celebrations in mind, non-commercial envelopes containing *rakhis*, small packets, and greeting cards weighing up to 500 grams will also be treated as documents.
**Items classified as parcels**
All items other than those on the document list will be classified as parcels; this includes electronic items, mobile phones, clothing and ready-made garments, gift items, and other heavy goods.
**New Speed Post services for 24-hour and 48-hour delivery**
Additionally, the Department of Posts has launched two new special express services—'24 Speed Post' and '48 Speed Post'—to ensure delivery within a very short timeframe. Under the '24 Speed Post' service, the aim is to deliver packets within 24 hours of booking, while the '48 Speed Post' service ensures delivery to the destination within 48 hours. However, this fast express facility is currently being launched in six major metropolitan cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. This is expected to greatly benefit banks, financial institutions, and ordinary citizens who frequently send documents.
**New Speed Post Rate List for Retail Customers**
From August 1st, Speed Post charges for retail customers will be determined based on the packet's weight, the distance, and the type of service selected. GST charges will also apply in addition to these rates.
Local delivery (up to 50g): ₹38 per article | Pan-India (up to 50g): ₹94 per article | 51g to 250g: ₹118 to ₹154 per article | 251g to 500g: ₹140 to ₹186 | 48 Speed Post: ₹61 to ₹121 per article.
