New Post Office Speed Post Rules: If you use the Post Office's Speed Post service to send important documents, bank passbooks, or Rakhis for Raksha Bandhan, this news is crucial for you. The Department of Posts is set to implement significant changes to Speed Post rules and rates starting August 1, 2026.

Under the new rules, the Department of Posts has clearly distinguished between the 'Document' and 'Parcel' categories. Additionally, special fast-delivery services—promising delivery within 24 and 48 hours—will be introduced for six major cities.

What qualifies as a 'Document' versus a 'Parcel'?
To eliminate confusion, the Department of Posts has classified items with no commercial value under the 'Document' category. Items falling under the 'Document' category include:

Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, Voter IDs, driving licenses, and passports; bank passbooks, chequebooks, welcome kits, bank statements, credit/debit cards, and insurance papers; and non-commercial Rakhi envelopes (up to 500 grams), small packets, and greeting cards for Raksha Bandhan.

Items falling under the 'Parcel' category include:
Electronic items and mobile phones; clothing and ready-made garments; and gift items and other heavy goods.

New Speed Post services for 24-hour and 48-hour delivery
The Department of Posts is launching two new special services for expedited delivery: '24 Speed Post' and '48 Speed Post'. The '24 Speed Post' service aims to deliver items within 24 hours of booking, while '48 Speed Post' ensures delivery within 48 hours. However, this express facility is currently being introduced in six major metropolitan cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Banks, financial institutions, and regular senders of documents stand to benefit the most from this initiative. New Speed Post Rate List for Retail Customers
Effective August 1st, Speed Post charges for retail customers will be determined based on distance, weight, and the type of service. Additionally, GST will be payable separately.

Standard Speed Post Charges (up to 50 grams)

Rates based on weight
