UPI integration, real-time parcel tracking, and more digital features rolling out in over 86,000 post offices

New Delhi, August 4, 2025:
India Post is going digital in a big way. In a move to modernize services, the Department of Posts is rolling out Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payment options across all post offices in the country. This means customers will soon be able to make digital payments for services like speed post and parcel booking, eliminating the need for cash transactions at the counter.

Advanced Postal Technology (APT) – A Game Changer

Under the new Advanced Postal Technology (APT) system, post offices are undergoing a phased IT infrastructure upgrade. This tech enhancement not only supports UPI payments but also improves tracking capabilities. Customers will now receive real-time updates about where their parcel is headed next — offering more transparency and convenience.

The APT system has already been implemented in major metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. According to official reports, more than 86,000 post offices have already been upgraded so far.

Faster Deliveries with Airline Tie-Ups

To strengthen its mail delivery network, India Post is also entering into agreements with airlines. A recent tender invites airlines to reserve space in the cargo holds of passenger flights specifically for postal bags. This is expected to speed up mail delivery across the country.

More Customer-Friendly Features Ahead

According to Communications State Minister Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, the upgraded system will soon include features like:

  • OTP-based delivery authentication

  • Customised services for bulk customers

  • Electronic proof of delivery

  • Improved customer interface

Additionally, the department is working on the 'DIGIPIN' initiative, which aims to link PIN codes with more precise geographic (latitude-longitude) data for accurate delivery.

Officials have also hinted at a futuristic email-like service that will allow letters to be redirected automatically if the recipient’s address changes — improving accuracy and reducing delays.

What This Means for You

If you're a regular user of postal services, expect a more seamless, secure, and modern experience in the coming months. Whether it’s booking a speed post or tracking a parcel, India Post is making sure it keeps up with today’s digital expectations.
