Solar Panels: Solar panels to be installed in 2,000 Bihar homes; major update on the scheme

Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana in Bihar, the target is to install solar plants on the rooftops of 2.50 lakh (250,000) low-income families by November; however, only about 49,000 homes have been covered so far.

Work is currently underway to install solar plants on the rooftops of low-income households across the state under the 'PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Bill Yojana' (Free Electricity Scheme). However, the pace of the scheme is currently well below the set target. While the government aims to install solar plants in 2.50 lakh homes by November, the work has been completed in only about 49,000 eligible households so far.

To meet the remaining target, the daily installation rate needs to be increased manifold in the coming period. The government has directed the concerned agencies to accelerate their operations.

Solar plants to be installed for free in low-income households

Solar plants with a capacity of 1.1 kW are being installed on the rooftops of economically weaker families belonging to the 'Kutir Jyoti' (BPL) category in Bihar. Significantly, these families will not have to spend a single rupee from their own pockets, as a 100% subsidy is being provided under the scheme. Although the initial phase targets 2.5 lakh needy families, plants have been installed in only about 49,000 homes to date. Consequently, installations must be completed in the remaining ~2.01 lakh homes by November to meet the target.

How many homes need solar installations daily?

The biggest challenge for the government right now is to rapidly increase the pace of solar plant installations. Compared to the speed of work since the scheme's inception, solar plants need to be installed in approximately 2,000 homes daily to meet the November deadline. According to the government, the scheme is now being continuously monitored. At the same time, strict instructions have been issued to all agencies to expedite their work.
