The central government has directed all smartphone companies in India to pre-install the smartphone security app "Sanchar Saathi" on new devices, ensuring that users cannot delete or disable it. This move aims to protect telecom networks and users from cyber threats, especially scams using fake or duplicate IMEI numbers.

90-Day Deadline and Companies' Responsibility
In its November 28th directive, the government has given smartphone companies 90 days to ensure that the Sanchar Saathi app is pre-installed on all new smartphones. For devices already on sale, manufacturers have been directed to install the app through a software update. Companies like Apple, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi are required to comply with this order.

This order has been sent privately to some companies and has not been made public. The government believes this step is necessary to strengthen cybersecurity.

Apple and the Privacy Challenge
Apple has previously opposed pre-installing government apps. According to the company's policy, only its own proprietary apps can be installed on devices. This new order could present another challenge for Apple in India. According to Counterpoint Research, approximately 4.5% of India's 735 million smartphones are Apple devices, while most of the rest run on the Android platform.

How does the Sanchar Saathi app work?
Every smartphone has a unique 14- to 17-digit IMEI number. This app helps block stolen or lost phones. Users can verify IMEI numbers, report suspicious calls, and block lost phones. The app has so far seen 5 million downloads and helped block more than 3.7 million stolen phones. According to government data, 50,000 phones were recovered using this app in October alone.

Other DoT Cybersecurity Directives
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has also directed OTT apps to remain linked to the SIM card used when creating a user account. If logged in on multiple devices, logging out every six hours will be mandatory, and re-logging in will be possible via a QR code. DoT has also ordered all Telecom Identifier User Entities (TIUEs) to submit a compliance report within 120 days.

Government's Objective and Benefits for Users
This government move is aimed at reducing cyber threats and addressing the issue of fake networks, duplicate IMEIs, or stolen phones. This will help users ensure the security of their phones and data. SIM-device binding in OTT apps will also strengthen cybersecurity and reduce the risk of fraudulent calls or fake numbers.
