Misuse of your SIM card can pose a threat to your banking and social media accounts, but the SIM PIN lock feature on your phone provides an extra layer of security. Here is how you can enable it.

Nowadays, mobile numbers are linked to banking services, UPI payments, email, and social media accounts. Consequently, if someone else gets hold of your SIM card, it could compromise your privacy and account security. In SIM swap fraud, scammers attempt to gain control over your number to access critical codes like OTPs. The SIM PIN lock feature on your phone can help protect against this. This feature is designed to minimize the risk of your SIM card being used without your permission. Let’s look at how to enable it.

When the SIM PIN lock is enabled, you must enter the PIN to use the SIM card whenever the phone is restarted or the SIM is inserted into another device. This makes it difficult for unauthorized individuals to use your SIM.

Before enabling the lock, obtain the default SIM PIN from your telecom operator; not all SIM cards share the same default PIN. Avoid guessing codes like '0000' or '1234' without verification.

On Android phones, look for the 'Security and Privacy' or 'SIM Lock' option within the Settings menu. The name or location of this setting may vary depending on the device. On iPhones, go to Settings and look for the 'SIM PIN' option under the 'Mobile' or 'Cellular' section.

Turn on the SIM PIN feature. When prompted, enter the current PIN provided by your telecom operator and then set your own four-digit PIN. Choose a number that is not easily guessable by others.

Restart your phone after setting the new PIN. If the feature has been enabled correctly, the device will ask for the SIM PIN before allowing network access. Remember your PIN and avoid entering it incorrectly repeatedly; doing so could lock the SIM, requiring assistance from the service provider to unlock it.

While the SIM PIN primarily protects against unauthorized use of the SIM card, it does not guarantee the prevention of SIM swaps or number transfers initiated at the telecom company level.
