How silver purity is determined

Silver purity is usually expressed in terms of 'fineness,' which indicates the percentage of pure silver within an alloy. For instance, a fineness of 999 means that 999 out of 1,000 parts are pure silver. Your choice depends on the intended use of the silver:

Fine Silver (999): This contains 99.9% pure silver, similar to 24-karat gold. It does not tarnish or blacken easily but is very soft; therefore, it is primarily used for investment purposes—in the form of coins and bars—rather than for daily-wear jewelry. Sterling Silver (925): This is the globally recognized standard for silver jewelry and silverware. It consists of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper or other metals.

Britannia Silver (95.8% pure): Britannia Silver contains 95.8% silver and 4.2% other metals. It was introduced in Britain in 1697 as a higher standard than sterling silver.

Coin Silver (90% pure): Coin silver consists of 90% silver and 10% copper. It derives its name from its historical use in coinage.

Jatin Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities, said, "The Dollar Index rising above 100 exerted some pressure on bullion, leading to mild profit-booking in gold prices. However, falling crude oil prices are supporting sentiment for gold. With no major economic data expected from the US this week—apart from mid-week manufacturing data—gold prices may remain range-bound, though volatility is likely to persist."

Analysts estimate that the $4,250 level remains a strong technical support, and gold is expected to trade within the $4,250–$4,450 range on COMEX and the ₹1,51,000–₹1,56,000 range on MCX.
