The government has decided to take an important step regarding the purity of silver jewelry. The new rule of hallmarking on silver jewelry can be implemented from September 1, 2025. However, this rule will be voluntary initially; that is, customers can buy hallmarked jewelry or choose jewelry without a hallmark. This will provide an option to the customers in a way, and it will not be mandatory at the moment. This process will be exactly like hallmarking, which was started for gold jewelry earlier. With these new rules to be implemented by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), it will be even easier for customers to identify the purity and quality of silver jewelry. Along with this, the trend of fake and fraudulent jewelry will be controlled, so that customers can get pure and quality jewelry. Purity standards for silver jewellery
Under the new system, BIS has fixed a total of six purity levels for silver, which are as follows: 900, 800, 835, 925, 970, and 990. The purpose of these purity levels is to ensure that the silver that customers get is of the same quality for which they are paying. A six-digit unique hallmark ID (HUID) will be given on each piece of jewellery, through which customers will be able to know whether the jewellery is genuine or not and how pure it is. From September 1, the customer will have both options – to buy hallmarked silver and silver without a hallmark. However, experts believe that the trend of customers will increase towards hallmarked jewellery, as this will increase confidence in the quality of the jewellery. Not only this, but this change will also prove beneficial for the jewellery industry, as it will increase transparency and reduce cases of fraud.

What are the benefits for customers?

The biggest advantage of hallmarking is that now customers will be able to easily ensure whether the silver jewelery they are buying is genuine or fake. Through the “Verify HUID” feature on the BIS Care App, customers can easily verify the hallmark given on any jewelery. In this way, there will be protection from fake and adulterated jewelery, and customers will get full value for their money. Apart from this, hallmarking on silver jewelery will increase transparency in the jewelery market, and it will further increase the confidence of the customers. This step will ensure the purity of silver jewelery across the country, which will increase competition in the market and control the sale of counterfeit products.

Hallmarking rules for gold jewelery were already in force
It is worth noting that this hallmarking rule is not new. Earlier in 2021, the government had made hallmarking mandatory on gold jewelery. Now, on the same lines, this system is being implemented for silver jewelery as well. This will provide a guarantee of quality in silver jewellery after gold, which will prove to be an important step for the customer.
